De viaje por Polonia / Poland guide

Este verano hemos viajado a Polonia, un precioso país todavía por descubrir por el turismo masivo, por lo que conserva su encanto genuino y resulta acogedor y relajante.  Debido a su localización estratégica y a la falta de montañas, que lo hace muy accesible, Polonia ha sufrido multitud de invasiones a lo largo de su historia, la última la que llevaron a cabo Alemania y Rusia en 1939 y que dio lugar poco después a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Salvo Cracovia, respetada por su gran belleza, el resto de ciudades han sido sistemáticamente destruídas, pero los polacos han unido esfuerzos para reconstruirlas, recuperando su esplendor, así como la identidad e historia de su nación.

This summer we traveled to Poland, a beautiful country still to be discovered by massive tourism, so it preserves its  genuine charm and it results cozy and relaxing. Because of its strategic location and the lack of mountains, what makes it very accessible, Poland has suffered multitude of invasions along its history. The latest was carried out by Germany and Russia in 1939 and provoked shortly the Second World War. Except Krakow, respected for its great beauty, the rest of cities have been systematically destroyed. But Polish have joined efforts to rebuild them, recovering their splendor, as well as the identity and history of their nation.

Comenzamos el viaje en Poznan, una ciudad universitaria que tiene un pequeño pero precioso centro histórico, entorno a la plaza del ayuntamiento, un monumental edificio. De allí nos fuimos a Varsovia, cuyo casco antiguo, la Ciudad Vieja, está total y maravillosamente reconstruido, como reconoció la Unesco en 1980.

We started the trip in Poznan, a university town that has a small but precious historical center, around the town hall square, a monumental building. From there we went to Warsaw, whose old town is total and wonderfully rebuilt, as recognized by the Unesco in 1980.

 Siempre se hace inevitable la comparación con Cracovia, la segunda ciudad del país, capital histórica y de una gran belleza. Pero vale la pena ir a Varsovia porque ofrece otras cosas: muchas huellas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y urbanismo y arquitectura de la época comunista, que también se ve reflejada en los rasgos y carácter de sus ciudadanos: introvertidos y serios, aunque también amables y serviciales. Hicimos dos visitas encantadoras: al parque  Lazienki el domingo por la mañana para escuchar un concierto gratuito de Chopin en un ambiente muy agradable que reune a numerosos varsovianos de junio a agosto, cuando se celebra el Festival de Chopin. Y al antiguo cementerio judío, un frondoso bosque  abarrotado de tumbas, algunas muy antiguas, aunque sigue en uso hoy en día. Fue sobrecogedor cruzarse con emigrantes en busca de las tumbas de sus familiares asesinados en la guerra. Una lección viva de historia.

It always becomes inevitable to compare it with Krakow, the second city in the country, the historical capital and city of great beauty. But it is worth visiting Warsaw because it offers different things: many traces of the Second World War and urban planning and architecture from the communist period, what is also reflected in the features and chartacter of its citizens: introverted and serious, but also friendly and helpful. We made two delightful visits: first one to Lazienki Park on Sunday morning to listen to a free concert of Chopin in a very pleasant atmosphere. It brings many Warsaw citizens together from June to August, when the Festival of Chopin takes place. And the second to the ancient Jewish cemetery, a lush forest crammed with tombs, some of them very ancient, although it is still in use nowadays. It was shocking to see the emigrants  searching the tombs of their relatives killed in the war. A living lesson of history.

La siguiente parada fue Cracovia, la joya de Polonia. Su centro histórico es de los más bonitos de Europa y tiene el aliciente de que no está muy explotada turísticamente. Aún así, el turismo y la vida universitaria (es un destino Erasmus) la han "occidentalizado" bastante. En este sentido es muy diferente a Varsovia. Tuvimos la suerte de coincidir con un día de fiesta, así que había un mercadillo de artesanía en la Plaza del Mercado  (Rynek Glowny). Por su situación e historia Polonia ha recibido influencia cultural tanto de Europa Occidental como de Europa Oriental y así se refleja en la gastronomía, la cerámica, la madera, los huevos pintados, los tapices y los bordados.

Next stop was Krakow, the jewel of Poland. Its historical center is one of the most beautiful in Europe and besides it is not as packed with tourists as other towns. Even so, tourism and university life (it is an Erasmus destination) have "westernized" it quite a lot. In this sense it is very different from Warsaw. We were lucky be there on a celebation day, so there was a craft market in the Market Square (Rynek Glowny). Because of its situation and history Poland has received cultural influence both from Western Europe as from Eastern Europe and so is reflected in gastronomy, ceramics, wood, the painted eggs, the tapestries and embroidery.

En Polonia se conserva la costumbre de hacer las cosas artesanalmente, de ahí que cuando vas a un restaurante has de tener paciencia, tardan unos veinte minutos en servirte desde que pides porque cocinan en el momento. Pero vale la pena, se nota la diferencia. Y es bastante relajante, porque la falta de prisas también se contagia. Igualmente, se pueden encontrar tiendas en las que se ofrecen productos autóctonos y hechos artesanalmente. Encontré una tienda de sombreros en el centro histórico de Cracovia, en la calle Florianska, muy cerca de la puerta Florian. No tiene nombre, pero es fácil de localizar. Son sombreros de estilo antiguo, modelos de los años treinta a cincuenta. Atiende a la clientela la señora que los confecciona, con la que nos entendimos perfectamente a pesar de que hablaba sólo polaco. Me probé varios modelos y compré finalmente uno no muy llamativo que a todos nos gustó como me quedaba, incluida la señora.

Polish still maintain the habit of doing things handmade, that is why when going to a restaurant it is better to take patience. Sometimes it takes about 20 minutes to serve your meal because it  is cooked at once. But it’s worth it, you will see the difference. And it is quite relaxing, because the lack of haste is contagious. Also, you can find shops that offer handmade native products. I found a hat shop in the historic center of Krakow, on Florianska street, very close to  Florian’s gate. It has no name, but it is easy to locate. The hats are old-style, models from the 1930s to 1950s. The shop assistant is the same woman who makes them . We were able to be understood perfectly well despite the fact that she spoke only polish. I tried some models on and I bought finally one not too flashy which everybody agreed it suited me, including the madam.

Nuestra última parada fue Wroclaw, una pequeña y preciosa ciudad constituida por pequeñas islas unidas por puentes, con gran cantidad de iglesias, una preciosa universidad y una espléndida plaza mayor, típica polaca: son enormes pero no lo parecen tanto al tener edificaciones en medio. Un buen final del viaje.

Our last stop was Wroclaw, a small and beautiful town made up of small islands connected by bridges, with plenty of churches, a beautiful university and a splendid main square, typical polish: they are huge but do not seem so because there are buildings in the middle.

A nivel práctico, Polonia resulta bastante económica. Es muy barato comer y alojarse. Otras cosas como la ropa no lo son tanto, pero a los turistas no nos afectan tanto. La gente no sabe mucho inglés y la mayoría de los carteles están en polaco, pero con una buena guía y la amabilidad de los lugareños te puedes aclarar. Para ir de una ciudad a otra viajamos en tren y autobús, que son baratos, confortables y puntuales. El clima es caluroso en verano (30º o más) y frío en invierno (-20º a -30º). En cuanto a compras lo más típico es la madera y el ámbar, pero insisto en que sencillamente es un placer disfrutar del pequeño comercio.

On a practical level, Poland is quite unexpensive. Restaurants and hotels are very cheap compared to Spain. Other things like clothes are not so cheap but tourists usually do not need to buy any! People don't speak English very well generally and most of the signs are in polish but you can manage with a good travel guide and the kindness of the locals. We travelled from a city to another by train and coach. Both are cheap, confortable and punctual. Weather is hot in summer (30º or above) and cold in winter (-20º to -30º). About shopping the most typical thing to buy is wood items and amber jewelery. But I do insist, it is a real pleasure simply to enjoy the little stores.

 

Elsa Schiaparelli, la gran olvidada

Los diseños de Elsa Schiaparelli eran exquisitos y rompedores, pero tuvo la mala suerte de coincidir con otros dos grandes de la moda en los momentos clave de su carrera: en su inicios y durante los años de éxito con Coco Chanel y al tratar de retomar su trabajo tras la segunda guerra mundial con Christian Dior.

The designs of Elsa Schiaparelli were exquisite and ground breaking, but she had the misfortune to coincide with two other major fashion designers at key moments of her career: at her beginings and during the years of success with Coco Chanel and when she was trying to take up her work after the World War II, with Christian Dior.

Schiap, como la llamaban sus amigos, nació en Roma en 1890 en el seno de una acomodada y culta familia (su abuelo fue un importante astrónomo al que ella hizo referencia en muchos de sus diseños). Estudió Filosofía y Letras y al acabar la carrera estuvo deambulando por Londres, París y Nueva York. Finalmente volvió a París, donde se instaló e hizo amistad con los grandes artistas de la época. De hecho, es la diseñadora del Surrealismo y trabajó con Dalí y Jean Cocteau, entre otros.

Schiap, as her friends called her, was born in Rome in 1890 into a wealthy and educated family (her grandfather was an important astronomer who she made reference to in many of her designs). She studied Philosophy and Letters and when she finished the carrer she lived in London, Paris and New York. Finally she returned to Paris, where she settled down and struck up a friendship with the great artists of that time. In fact, she is the designer of Surrealism and worked with Dali and Jean Cocteau, among others.

Debido a su educación y a su entorno familiar y social, sus diseños estaban fuertemente influidos por el arte, de forma que resultaban de una elegancia muy teatral. Se trataba de prendas con muchos detalles, en los que buscaba la belleza, se dice que para contrarrestar sus propios complejos, pues era una mujer fea a la que su madre había martirizado por ello.

Due to her education and her familiar and social environment, her designs were strongly influenced by the art, so they result very elegance and very theatrical. Thery were costumes full of details, in which she sought the beauty. People say she did so to counteract her own complexes as she was an anattractive woman and had been tormented by her mother because of that fact.

Era una diseñadora original y muy atrevida,  Innovó en todo: en los materiales,  con el uso del hilo de metal y los sintéticos y llegando a emplear el celofán o el plástico, lo que no se había hecho antes; en los colores, introduciendo los turquesas y los fucsias (el famoso rosa shocking inspirado en las begonias del jardín de sus padres); conceptualmente, realizando las primeras líneas de bañadores y ropa deportiva para mujer; y, por supuesto, en los cortes (creó la falda pantalón y las hombreras) y en los detalles de los trajes (cremalleras como motivo decorativo, por ejemplo).

She was an original and very daring designer. She innovated in everything: materials, using metal thread and the synthetic and even using cellophane or plastic, never done before; in colors, introducing the turquoise and the fuchsias (like the famous shocking-pink inspired by the begonias garden of her parents); conceptually, making the first  swimwear and sportswear collections for women; and, of course, in the cuts (she created the pant skirt and the shoulder pads) and in the details of the costumes (zippers as decorative motif, for example).

En definitiva, Elsa Schiaparelli era totalmente opuesta al estilo austero de Coco Chanel. Pero al igual que ésta, tuvo mucho éxito en el periodo de entreguerras. Entre sus clientas se encontraban Mae West, Marlene Dietrich o Wallis Simpson.

In short, Elsa Schiaparelli was totally opposed to the austere style of Coco Chanel. But as Chanel did, she had much success in the period between the two wars. Among her clients were Mae West, Marlene Dietrich or Wallis Simpson.

Con el estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial se fue a Nueva York y no volvió a París hasta que terminó el conflicto. Trató de retomar su negocio, pero las cosas habían cambiado, imperaba la sobriedad. Y Elsa fue incapaz de adaptarse a ello. Además, por entonces Christian Dior revolucionaba la moda con una filosofía totalmente nueva.

At the outbreak of World War II she went to New York and she did not return to Paris until the conflict ended. She tried to take up her business again, but things had changed and sobriety ruled. But Elsa was unable to adapt to it. In addition, in that time Christian Dior was revolutionizing fashion with a completely new philosophy.

Aún así, Elsa Schiaparelli dejó un importante legado: la introducción de la creatividad en el mundo de la moda. Y así lo encontramos en grandes diseñadores como Jean Paul Gaultier o John Galliano.

Even so, Elsa Schiaparelli left an important legacy: the introduction of creativity in the world of fashion. And so we can find it in great designers like Jean Paul Gaultier or John Galliano.

Creadores-escritores que merecen especial atención / Craft authors

Las propuestas literarias del blog se van actualizando y ampliando, pero hay autores que merecen algo más que la mención de uno de sus libros, pues son estupendos artistas.

The Blog’s literary proposals are updated and expanded, but there are some authors that deserve more than the mention of one of their books, as thery are great artists.

Una de mis preferidas es Lesley Stanfield, autora de numerosos libros de punto y ganchillo y editora de la sección de punto de las revistas Woman y Family Circle.  Sus preciosos diseños se caracterizan por su realismo y el alto nivel de detalle: parece que las flores huelan y los pajaritos vayan a cantar. Mi libro preferido, y que por ello ya aconsejé en otro post, es 100 Flores de punto y ganchillo.

One of my favorite is Lesley Stanfield, author of numerous books about knit and crochet and editor of the section about knit of the journals Woman and Family Circle. Their precious designs are characterized by its realism and the high level of details: it seems that the flowers smell and the little birds sing. My favorite book, and therefore already advised in another post, is 100 Flowers of Knit and Crochet.

También es muy interesante Jan Eaton, una conocida artista cuyo trabajo abarca el bordado, el ganchillo y el punto. Estudió en el Goldsmiths College de Londres y ha desarrollado su profesión como colaboradora en diversas revistas, además de publicar sus propios libros. En España la editorial Oceano Ambar ha publicado casi toda su obra (ver bibliografía en castellano y en inglés). Los más interesantes son los libros dedicados al ganchillo, pues es una de las creadoras que lo ha actualizado con sus diseños geométricos de inspiración Art Deco,  modernos con toques clásicos y siempre con alegres y elegantes combinaciones de colores. Además son muy instructivos porque explica cómo crear nuevos modelos a partir de sus propuestas. También ha escrito libros dedicados exclusivamente a las técnicas de ganchillo. Sus libros sobre punto de cruz son más clásicos: Manual práctico de motivos en punto de cruz o Pinturas famosas a punto de cruz.

Also very interesting is Jan Eaton, a well-known artist whose work includes embroidery, crochet and knit.She studied at the Goldsmiths College, London, and has carried out her profession as contributor in different magazines, apart from publishing her own books. In Spain the editorial “Oceano Ambar” has published almost all her work (see references in spanish and english). The most interesting books are about crochet, because it is one of the designers who have updated it with her geometric designs Art Deco inspirated, modern but with classics touches and always with cheerful and elegant color combinations. They are also very instructive because they explain how to create new models from her proposals. She has also written books dedicated exclusively to the techniques of crochet. Her books about knit are more classics: “Practical Handbook about motifs in cross stitch” or “Famous paintings in cross stitch”.

En cambio, los libros de punto de cruz de Gail Bussi, diseñadora que mencioné en el post anterior, son una delicia. Su especialidad son las casas, que rezuman el "aroma" de la campiña inglesa. En España los publica Alba Libros.

In contrast, Gail Bussi’s books about cross stitch, designer who I mentioned in the post above, are a delight. Her specialty are houses, that oonze the "flavour" of English countryside. In Spain, “Alba Libros” publishes them.

 

Finalmente, quisiera mencionar un libro: Moda vintage. La evolución de la moda y el vestido en los últimos cien años. Se publican muchos libros que pretenden recorrer la moda del siglo XX, pero es realmente difícl lograrlo sin que su precio final resulte muy caro. Y éste lo ha conseguido. Tiene mucho texto, en el que se explican muy bien los estilos, tejidos y diseñadores de cada época. También hay muchas y muy buenas fotografías. Y además, imprescindible en estas obras, un glosario de diseñadores, otro de términos de moda y un índice muy completos. La única pega es su título, que intuyo que quiere atraer con el tan de moda "vintage" llevando a confusión respecto al contenido.

Finally, I would like to mention a book: “Vintage Fashion. Collecting and wearing designer classics”. Many books are published seeking to cover the fashion of the twentieth century, but it is really difficult to achieve it at a good price. And this has really got it. It has much text, where are explained very well the styles, fabrics and designers of each time. There are also many good pictures. And in addition, essential in these works, a glossary of designers, another of fashion words and a very complete index. The only inconvenience is its title, which I think tries to attract attention with the so fashionable word "vintage" but it takes to confusion regarding its content.

El bordado es el arte de la aguja "básico", el pilar. En realidad no se puede comparar el punto con el ganchillo, el patchwork o el bordado, cada uno tiene su propia autonomía y, sobre todo, es cuestión de gustos. Pero bordar ayuda a desarrollar las habilidades y los conceptos que se emplean en las otras disciplinas. Además, es muy maleable, permite plasmar nuestra creatividad sin limitaciones. De ahí los estilos tan dispares que podemos encontrar. Aquí van dos pinceladas muy distintas pero igualmente atractivas.

Embroidery is the basic art of the needle, the pillar. Actually knit cannot be compared with crochet, patchwork or embroidery, each has its own autonomy and, above all, is a matter of taste. But embroidering helps to develop the skills and concepts that are used in the other disciplines. In addition, it is very adaptable, it allows to translate our creativity without limitations. Hence the styles so diverse we can find. Two very different examples but equally attractive are the following.

La primera, los cuadros de estaciones que está haciendo mi hermana Esperanza, prueba de lo complicado que puede ser el punto de cruz, ya que están bordados sobre lino, por lo que contar hilos y seguir el patrón se hace difícil. Me parecen muy delicados y elegantes. Y un reto que despierta las ganas de coger la aguja. Los diseños son de Gail Bussi, una autora inglesa que publica en España en la editorial Alba Libros. Estos modelos en concreto son de "Casas de campo en punto de cruz".

First, the work representing the seasons that my sister Esperanza is making, proof of how complicated cross stitch may be. It is embroidered on linen, so counting threads and following the pattern becomes very difficult. I find it very delicate and elegant. And a challenge that awakens the desire to take the needle. The designs are from  Gail Bussi, an english author who publishes in Spain in the editorial “Alba Libros”. These designs in particular are from "Country houses in cross stitch".
  

Cambiando de estilo y como muestra de la versatilidad de este arte, el vídeo de la canción Like it or not del grupo australiano Architecture in Helsinki. Está hecho con bordados de Megan Whitmarsh, una artista muy polífacética, pues utiliza distintos medios de expresión: pintura, fotografía, vídeo, bordado,... Sus obras son contemporáneas, complejas y divertidas a la vez.  Se caracterizan por el uso de colores fuertes, especialmente los básicos y los colores ácidos.

Changing the style and as a sign of the versatility of this art, the video of the song “Like it or not” of the Australian group “Architecture in Helsinki”. It is made using the embroidery of Megan Whitmarsh, a very versatile artist, because she uses different means of expression: painting, photography, video, embroidery, ... Her works are contemporary, complex and fun at once. They are characterized by the use of strong colours, especially basics and acid colours.
