Mi hija Ana quiere que le enseñe a coser y a hacer punto para hacerle ropa a sus muñecas. El caso es que yo me siento inútil: no sé por donde empezar, no encuentro el momento y temo que se haga daño. Pero Ana tiene nueve años y yo empecé a coser en el colegio con ocho. ¿Cómo se hacía antes? ¿Y cómo hacerlo ahora?
My daughter Ana wants me to teach her to sew and to knit in order to make clothes for her dolls. The fact is that I feel incapable: I don't know where to start from, I can not find the moment and I am afraid she hurts. But Ana is nine years old and I started to sew in the school when I was eight. How was it done before? And how should I do it now?

Si queremos apuntar a nuestros hijos a clases de manualidades podemos optar por la pintura, la cerámica, el origami,... Pero nada de coger la aguja. Cuando mi hija o sus amigas ven las cosas que hago les encantan, pero lo ven inaccesible. Hay que romper los esquemas vigentes, superados los anteriores: las mujeres ya no tenemos que cocinar o coser. Aunque si nos gusta podemos hacerlo. La mayoría de la gente no entiende que yo sea asesora fiscal y me dedique también a la costura. Seguro que les encajaría más si pintara, por ejemplo.
If we want our children to follow craft lessons we can opt for painting, pottery, origami,... But nothing to do with the needle. When my daughter or their friends see things I have made they love them, but they think they are unattainable. We must shatter our actual preconceptions, once we have got over the old ones: women are no longer obliged to cook or sew, but we can do it if we like to. Most of the people don't understand that I like sewing but beeing a tax consultant. It does not fit. Sure it would do if I liked painting, for example.
En general, nuestra generación ya no ha aprendido de sus madres a coser. Ellas trabajaban y nosotras estudiamos. Mi madre y mi suegra aprendieron a bordar en casa y han hecho cosas preciosas. Pero lo dejaron. Mi suegra me cuenta cómo su tía le hacía repetir las cosas una y otra vez hasta que las puntadas eran perfectas.
In general, our generation has no longer learned sewing from their mothers. They worked and we studied. My mother and my mother-in-law have learned embroidery at home and they have made precious things. But they gave up. My mother-in-law told me how her aunt made her repeat works again and again until the stitches were perfect.
En cambio, mi amiga Ana Pili, para mi como una tía, sí ha seguido cosiendo. Aprendió con 13 años en casa y luego con una modista. Más tarde empezó a hacer punto y ganchillo con revistas. Y hace unos ocho años emprendió el punto de cruz y el encaje de bolillos. Ha alcanzado un nivel muy alto. Lo que más admiro son sus trabajos de punto porque hace cosas muy complicadas y no necesita patrones. Y sus obras de encaje de bolillos, que según ella no es muy difícil, aunque a mi me lo parece. Ha hecho cursos y realiza verdaderas filigranas.
In contrast, my friend Ana Pili has kept on sewing. She learned when she was 13 years old at home and later with a dressmaker. Later she learnt knit and crochet from magazines. And about eight years ago she started with cross stitch and bobbin laces. She has reached a very high level. What I admire most is her knit works because she makes very complicated designs and doesn’t need any patterns. And her bobbin laces works, which according to her are not very difficult, though it really seems to me. She has taken lessons and makes really intricate works.

Espero poder tener una progresión como la de Ana Pili. Y que mi hija tenga la oportunidad de probar si le gusta coser. Algunos amigos me animan a hacer cursos para niños y me gustaría, pero me falta tiempo. Espero ponerlo en marcha algún día.
